Missing Limbs

 Missing limbs research:

In ‘older’ versions of film and TV shows, missing limb effects were usually created via green screens.

For example: in 1994’s film Forrest Gump, the actor wore green stockings and filmed most of his scenes

in front of a green screen. In post production, the background was added and the end of the leg was

"neatened up" by digital artists, frame by frame.

An example from Forrest Gump: when Lt. Dan is in the hospital after losing his legs, he's lying in a bed

with the stumps covered with bandages. This effect was created by simply cutting holes in the mattress

and adding fake stumps onto his knees.

Similarly, in The Deer Hunter, John Savage hid his legs in the base of his wheelchair so that he appeared to have had them

amputated.

However, this wasn’t always the case as Lon Chaney worked on films where he would play a role with

missing arms or legs and he would do it by hiding the limbs by physical means.

If the arms or legs were supposed to be missing and they were going to create this effect physically,

without the use of a green screen, they would have the actors bend their arm/leg and place a ‘wrap’

around them to hold them in place. They would also usually have costumes cut in order to help enhance

the effect.

The missing limb effects would usually only appear in gory horror / thriller films and TV shows, sometimes

action movies and dramas too. This could include fingers, toes, legs, arms, hands and feet.

Missing Arm: (was only shown how to do it with a black background)

  • Gelatine

  • Body paint

  • To begin with, map out the area of where you want the skin to look ‘torn up’ with the gelatine.

  • Next, shade around the edges with red, going in with purple and brown to deepen the effect.

  • Go over the gelatine with red, brown and purple, covering everything.

  • Then , go around the edges with a brown.

  • To soften out the edges of the gelatine, go over them with fake blood.

  1. Really good work Abigail, I can see that you have researched this in depth, and though it can be taken further with images and some more explanations in how the physical makeup is created. This is a really good referencing basis. Keep it up

Pantomime Dame makeup evaluation

For the pantomime dame makeup, I like the outcome of the eye makeup, the orange especially, because I like how it has been blended from dark to light. I also like the eyeliner both on the eyelid and below the eye, including the white, as it enhances the eye shape and size. However, I need to improve on being able to cover up my eyebrows and raising the drawn on ones further up my forehead as they were too far down. I also need to darken the contouring on the cheeks and the jaw. I also think I should darken the outline of the lips too as it isn’t as visible as it should be. This makeup would be suitable for a small and medium sized stage and audience as it can be seen from far enough away. The colours could also work underneath certain stage lights as they wont be blended together. edit: 23/05/2021

Emaciation makeup evaluation

For the emaciation makeup, I like how the makeup shows the cause of emaciations (for example: for the makeup shown in the image, I chose the cause to be an eating disorder, whereas if the cause was sickness, for example, the skin would have a greenish tone.). To improve, I should try out emaciation but make the cause different to be able to understand fully what the effect would be for different causes (such as emaciation as a result of malnourishment). Another way in which I could improve would be to make sure the shaded areas look 'evened out' and add a little bit more depth to the eyes. Considering this makeup was meant for screen, it would have needed to be a bit more subtle on the cheekbones, as the makeup appears to be too obvious. I would also have had to add some shading to the neck to show how other areas of the body are affected by this disorder. Edit: 23/05/2021

One colour challenge evaluation

Instagram one colour challenge evaluation: What I like about this look is the way I have coloured the eyebrows. Before applying the blue colour itself, I used colour corrector and concealer to lighten the eyebrows so that the blue will show up better on the hairs. I also like the contour of this look as I think it has been blended out nicely. However, I don’t like the eyeshadow as although I tried to use three different colours of blues on the eyes, they all look like just one colour. Therefore, to improve this look, I would use lighter variants of blue to make sure they stand out better. This also wouldn't work on photograph as the difference in the colour variants aren't bold enough in real life to show up on camera unless the photographs were taken up close. Edit: 26/02/2021
