Red Carpet MUA Research

 Hung Vanngo:

Hung Vanngo is a New York-based makeup artist. Born in Vietnam, he moved to Canada as a child and spent his youth and early adulthood in Calgary. Once Vanngo moved to NYC, he began collaborating with some well-known fashion photographers, such as Carter Smith, Craig McDean and Emma Summerton. His work has appeared in the pages of popular magazines, such as Allure, ELLE, Glamour and Vogue. Hung Vanngo has also worked with many different A-list celebrities, such as Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Lopez, Katy Perry and Kate Bosworth. However, he is mainly well-known for being a long time makeup artist for Selena Gomez.

His hard work and dedication to his work has resulted in the praise of many others within the industry and has achieved many awards. His collection had most recently included the 2005 Canadian Network of Makeup Artists in the Best Editorial makeup artist of the year category and in 2004, Vanngo became the first winner of Lancome's Canadian Makeup Artist of the Year Award.

He has also worked on advertising campaigns for Holt Renfrew, Lancome, Loreal, Proctor and Gamble, Ports, Lida Baday, Marlowe, Harry Rosen, Parasuco Jeans, Winners, Danier Leather, Badgley Mischka and many others.

Hung Vanngo is also well known for the makeup he does for celebrities at red carpet events such as Met Gala, Oscar Awards, Victoria’s Secret shows and the Grammy Awards.

Hung Vanngo inspires me as a makeup artist for quite a few reasons. One of those reasons being his creativity. Not only can he create stunning makeup looks, he can also match these looks to the person's outfit.

Pantomime Dame makeup evaluation

For the pantomime dame makeup, I like the outcome of the eye makeup, the orange especially, because I like how it has been blended from dark to light. I also like the eyeliner both on the eyelid and below the eye, including the white, as it enhances the eye shape and size. However, I need to improve on being able to cover up my eyebrows and raising the drawn on ones further up my forehead as they were too far down. I also need to darken the contouring on the cheeks and the jaw. I also think I should darken the outline of the lips too as it isn’t as visible as it should be. This makeup would be suitable for a small and medium sized stage and audience as it can be seen from far enough away. The colours could also work underneath certain stage lights as they wont be blended together. edit: 23/05/2021

Emaciation makeup evaluation

For the emaciation makeup, I like how the makeup shows the cause of emaciations (for example: for the makeup shown in the image, I chose the cause to be an eating disorder, whereas if the cause was sickness, for example, the skin would have a greenish tone.). To improve, I should try out emaciation but make the cause different to be able to understand fully what the effect would be for different causes (such as emaciation as a result of malnourishment). Another way in which I could improve would be to make sure the shaded areas look 'evened out' and add a little bit more depth to the eyes. Considering this makeup was meant for screen, it would have needed to be a bit more subtle on the cheekbones, as the makeup appears to be too obvious. I would also have had to add some shading to the neck to show how other areas of the body are affected by this disorder. Edit: 23/05/2021

One colour challenge evaluation

Instagram one colour challenge evaluation: What I like about this look is the way I have coloured the eyebrows. Before applying the blue colour itself, I used colour corrector and concealer to lighten the eyebrows so that the blue will show up better on the hairs. I also like the contour of this look as I think it has been blended out nicely. However, I don’t like the eyeshadow as although I tried to use three different colours of blues on the eyes, they all look like just one colour. Therefore, to improve this look, I would use lighter variants of blue to make sure they stand out better. This also wouldn't work on photograph as the difference in the colour variants aren't bold enough in real life to show up on camera unless the photographs were taken up close. Edit: 26/02/2021
