Little Shop Of Horrors - meeting one:


Little Shop Of Horrors is a comedy rock musical and, overall, a love story, but also a warning of

what happens if you do anything to get what you want. Seymour, a plant shop worker on Skid Row,

discovers an alien-like plant, and finds out that when this plant is fed human blood, things suddenly

go right for him.

LSOH has a film adaptation that was based off of the musical by Howard Ashman and Alan

Menken. These are both set in the early 1960’s. However, for the production we will be working on,

it was decided that it will be set in the 1990’s instead. To show this, the characters' hair, clothes

and makeup will need to be based off of popular trends in the 90’s. To make sure we are able to

achieve this, we will all need to conduct some research on this topic to develop our knowledge on

90’s hair, makeup and fashion and produce moodboards, face charts and designs to help with our work

on the character makeup designs. These moodboards will consist of a collection of images surrounding

a certain topic, face charts are designs created using makeup on a face with theproducts we used listed below and designs are drawings of the makeup we will be creating. We will

also have to adapt the hair and makeup to a theatre performance. To do this, the makeup will need to

be a lot more bold to make it stand out on the stage, in front of the audience and underneath the stage

lights.


The production will be held at The Hub in Teeside University on 20/05/2021 and 21/05/2021.

During this meeting, we went over the project brief, discussing what we will be doing as a makeup

department; both individually and as a group. This would include gathering ideas for each of the

characters (such as creating moodboards and researching the overall theme of the show), creating

makeup designs for each of the characters and developing these ideas as a group through

experimentation and creating face charts for each of the characters. 

We also talked about the assessment criteria and evidence and the grading criteria for the project.


We then read through the script as a group. Each person voiced a character.

During this meeting, we were all assigned work to do over the Easter holiday in time for the next

meeting. We needed to come up with moodboards and designs for the characters Seymour, Audrey,

Audrey Two and the three girls. These moodboards should consist of images and drawings (maybe

even colour swatches) to help inspire the character design. The character design is how we pictured

the character’s hair and makeup to look like, using the moodboard as inspiration (these will then be

developed/changed as we progress). 


When creating the moodboard and design for Seymour, I took a look at famous 90’s actors such as

Johnny Depp and Christan Slater. When creating the moodboard and design for Audrey, I took a look

at 90’s Britney Spears and Alicia Silverstone. When creating the moodboard and design for Audrey Two,

I took inspiration from the drag queen Crystal Methyd and took a look at different types of plants

(such as a venus flytrap and a pitcher plant) as this character was meant to be a giant, man eating plant.

When creating the moodboard and desin for the girls, I took a look at popular 90’s makeup colours and

techniques (such as: thin eyebrows and bold/metallic colours).


Once the meeting was over, I read through the script once more and highlighted / annotated any parts

that we need to know to help us with future designs such as the characters personalities, any notes

about the lighting, anything that will contribute to the changing of the makeup (e.g Audrey’s black eye /

being slapped across the cheek).


Lighting:

Shown above are some of the notes I have highlighted about the stage lighting. I highlighted these as,

if they were to be used in the production, this would mean that the lighting will vary in colours. This is

important to know as the makeup will need to be adjusted so that it is still noticeable under the different

light colours and intensity. This will also affect the hair as, especially with bright backlighting, any

flyaways on the hair will need to be slicked back down using gel as otherwise this could cause the hair

to look messy.


Injuries:

In the images shown above, I have highlighted and annotated any notes that show potential injuries,

such as: Audrey’s bruised eye and Seymour’s cuts. These are important as these injuries will need to

be obvious to everyone in the audience and so we will need to figure out a way to make these apparent

(such as using spray blood on Audrey Two and using dark colours for the bruise).


Notes to help with the makeup:

Shown above, I have highlighted any extra notes about the characters, especially what they will be

wearing and their personality as the makeup will need to reflect this (example: Mrs Luce wearing a

business suit with fox fur shows that she is a glamorous character, therefore the hair and makeup will

need to be neat and glamorous to demonstrate this).

Pantomime Dame makeup evaluation

  For the pantomime dame makeup, I like the outcome of the eye makeup, the orange especially, because I like how it has been blended from dark to light. I also like the eyeliner both on the eyelid and below the eye, including the white, as it enhances the eye shape and size. However, I need to improve on being able to cover up my eyebrows and raising the drawn on ones further up my forehead as they were too far down. I also need to darken the contouring on the cheeks and the jaw. I also think I should darken the outline of the lips too as it isn’t as visible as it should be. This makeup would be suitable for a small and medium sized stage and audience as it can be seen from far enough away. The colours could also work underneath certain stage lights as they wont be blended together. edit: 23/05/2021

LSOH meeting 12:

  LSOH meeting 12: 19/05/2021 The day before the production. To start off this meeting, we began by checking through the production folder together to make sure we had everything we needed in there, including face charts, makeup designs, actors headshots and skin consultation sheets. It was important we had all of this in there as it was important we knew what makeup we were doing, how we would be applying it to the actors face and which products we needed to check for and organise. This showed good organisation skills as we were checking beforehand to make sure we had everything ready for the production nights. We then took some time to work in the LRC to polish up our blogs for a little while and add in anything we may have missed; this could include: adding in any missing images and any information on what we had discussed/decided on during previous meetings.
